Abstract

This study is to investigate the consonant accuracy and phonological response characteristics according to the word position, articulation method, and articulation position of general children and deaf ones. The subjects of this study were 10 normal children and 10 other children with hearing impairment who were living in G city and conducted Korean language articulation test for children and divided into two groups based on the standard of 80% consonant accuracy, with which the incidence of phonological variability and non-developmental phonological variability was compared. As a result of the analysis, consonant accuracy was meangingfully higher in children with hearing impairment than in normal children in fricative sounds among articulation methods. In the phonological variance comparison, the general children showed a higher frequency of tension sound, while the hearing-impaired children showed a higher frequency of relaxation. In the comparison of group phonemic variation, the general children group showed little non-developmental phonological changes, whereas the hearing impaired children group showed non-developmental phonological fluctuations such as initial abstraction, relaxation sound, vocalization, and non-nasalization. In the hearing impaired children group, the frequency of consonant accuracies was significantly higher.
